நியோகா என்பது பண்டைய இந்துச் சமூகத்தில் கடைப்பிடிக்கப்பட்ட ஓர் உறவுமுறை. இந்து தர்மமான மனுஸ்மிருதியில் இம்முறை குறித்துச் சட்டங்களும் வகுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. குழந்தை பெற முடியாத கணவனைக் கொண்ட அல்லது கணவனை இழந்த பெண்ணொருத்தி வேறொரு ஆடவனோடு கூடிக் குழந்தையைப் பெற்றுக்கொள்ளலே இம்முறை. மகாபாரதத்திலே திருதிராட்டினன், பாண்டு, கர்ணன், பஞ்ச பாண்டவர்கள் எல்லோருமே இம்முறையிலேயே பிறக்கிறார்கள்.
இந்த நியோகா முறையின் முக்கிய நிபந்தனைகள் எதுவெனில் பெண் மூன்று தடவைகள் மட்டுமே அந்த ஆடவனோடு கூட முடியும். நான்காவது முறை உறவுகொள்வது தடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அதேபோன்று குழந்தை பெறுவதை மட்டும் கருதியே இந்த நியோகா உறவு நடக்கவேண்டும். இந்த உறவில் காமமோ காதலோ இருக்கக்கூடாது.
இந்த இரண்டு நிபந்தனைகளும் எவ்வளவு அநீதியானவை, கேலிக்கிடமானவை என்பதை முன்னிறுத்தி இந்தியில் சுரேந்திர வர்மா எழுதிய ‘சூரியனின் கடைசிக் கிரணத்திலிருந்து சூரியனின் முதல் கிரணம்வரை’ என்ற நாடகம் (தமிழில் வி.சரோஜா) துல்லியமான பெண்ணியப் பிரதி.
எழுத்து, நாடகம், குறும்படங்கள் மூலம் அறியப்பட்ட சுமதியின் சிறுகதையொன்றே ‘நியோகா’விற்கான மூலம். திரைப்படப் பிரதியை சுமதியும் நானும் இணைந்து எழுதியிருக்கிறோம். சுமதியே இயக்கியுமிருக்கிறார். இலங்கையில் தொடங்கி கனடாவில் தொடரும் கதைக்களம்.

Synopsis:
“Niyoga” is a gripping story of Malar, a middle-aged Tamil woman, a political refugee who fled Sri Lanka during the civil war. It revolves around a fractured immigrant family, people left behind, especially a woman, without choice, without voice, and without a future. Malar’s marriage to Ranjan, a young radical journalist only lasted three days when unknown men abducted him. He joined the ever-growing list of missing persons who voiced for human rights in the country. In fear of their own lives, Malar and family move to Canada and settle in the suburbs of Toronto. Conventional Tamil family values continues Malar’s brother, Jeeva freely goes to school, gets a degree, finds a job in Toronto, and chose to marry the girl he loves. While Malar is expected to wait for her disappeared husband under the wings of her parents and brother. Two decades pass slowly and Malar lives as a shadow in her own house without a voice of her own. She adores plants and nature and her only happiness in life is gardening and walks in the park. In search of her missing husband, her mother seeks out astrologists to predict Malar’s future and her husband’s possible return while her father exhausts his attempts to contact the local and international human rights organisations. Things take a radical turn when three young men come into Malar’s life: a young astrologist, a stalker, and a family friend, Naren. Will she come out of the familial fences and assert a new self or will she be buried under her own shadows forever?
